Carpenter masterful again as Cards down Reds

Baseball Betting Lines

06/02/2010 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chris Carpenter allowed only one run in eight strong innings, earning his eighth consecutive winning decision against the Reds in a 4-1 Cardinals victory.

Carpenter (7-1), who has not lost to Cincinnati since June 6, 2006, improved to 10-3 lifetime against the Reds after yielding just four hits and two hit batsmen while fanning four without walking a batter. Kyle McClellan pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Matt Holliday hit a solo homer, while Brendan Ryan, Skip Schumaker and Ryan Ludwick each had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who drew into a virtual tie with Cincy atop the NL Central after their fifth win in seven games -- including two out of three in this series.

Scott Rolen drove in the only run for the Reds, who have lost three of four following a four-game win streak. Sam LeCure (1-1), making his second major league start, gave up three runs on six hits and four walks in 5 1/3 frames.

Carpenter allowed a leadoff double to Orlando Cabrera to start the game but shut down the Reds from there.

After Brandon Phillips sacrificed Cabrera to third, Joey Votto lined into a double play to the shortstop Ryan, who threw out Cabrera at third to end the inning.

Carpenter retired 15 of the next 16 hitters, and LeCure hit Yadier Molina with a pitch with two down in the fourth. It proved costly, as Ryan followed with an RBI triple to put St. Louis ahead by a run.

The Cards increased their lead to three in the home sixth on a Schumaker sacrifice fly and Ludwick two-out RBI single.

Cincinnati finally threatened again in the seventh, as Phillips singled and Votto was hit by a pitch to start the frame. Rolen drove in Phillips with a single, sending Votto to third, although Rolen was called out when he was hit with Jay Bruce's batted ball.

That left runners on the corners with one out, and Carpenter struck out Jonny Gomes before retiring Drew Stubbs on a fly out to get out of the jam with the Cardinals still leading, 3-1.

Holliday quickly restored St. Louis' three-run lead with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh.

After Carpenter got through the eighth unscathed, McClellan finished off the victory with a perfect ninth for his fifth career save.

Game Notes

Dusty Baker and Tony La Russa have faced off 185 times in their managerial careers, and Baker holds a slight 93-92 edge...St. Louis leads the season series, 7-5...Carpenter notched his third win of the season against Cincinnati.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
