Daytona Nationwide qualifying rained out, Patrick starts 15th

02/12/2010 - Daytona Beach, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Nationwide Series season started on a soggy note with Friday's qualifying at Daytona International Speedway canceled due to rain.

According to NASCAR's rule book, the starting lineup for the first Nationwide race of the season was determined by last year's owner points, previous drivers and owners who won a race, past series champions and a qualifying draw.

Kyle Busch, the 2008 champion, will start on the pole, while Carl Edwards will start alongside him on the front row for the DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was awarded the third starting spot, followed by Kevin Harvick and John Wes Townley.

The top-30 in owner points determined positions 1-30.

Danica Patrick will start 15th in her Nationwide debut. Patrick, who has been the center of attention this week at Daytona, was guaranteed a starting position due to JR Motorsports' acquisition of points from CJM Racing's No.11 team, which finished 15th in points last season.

Last Monday, Patrick made the decision to run the Nationwide event at Daytona after her impressive sixth-place finish in the ARCA race here last weekend. She was 26th in her first Nationwide practice at Daytona on Wednesday, but improved to fifth on the practice speed charts the following day.

"I think that I'm just gonna have to stay calm and cool," Patrick said about racing in the 300-mile event. "If the car is difficult to drive, I think the discipline will be to just keep it at the pace that I'm comfortable with, keep it in the race, try and work on it on the pit stops and tune it in as much as possible. We have another hundred miles this weekend as opposed to last weekend."

Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart will start 31st and 32nd, respectively, based on their previous race wins, while Jeff Green will roll off 33rd due to his 2000 championship.

Those drivers making the race from the qualifying draw include: Brad Teague, Chrissy Wallace, Danny Efland, Brian Scott, Johnny Sauter, Scott Riggs, Morgan Shepherd, Stanton Barrett, Bobby Gerhart and Paul Menard.

Jeremy Clements, Kevin Lepage, John Borneman III, Brett Rowe, Derrike Cope, Johnny Chapman, Jason Keller and Shelby Howard did not make the field.

According to the National Weather Service, Saturday's forecast at Daytona calls for mostly cloudy skies in the morning, then gradually becoming sunny in the afternoon. The race is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. (et).
