03/03/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - It's safe to say that Alex Ovechkin didn't get the results he was looking for in the recent Winter Olympic Games. He'll now get back to chasing his first Stanley Cup championship.
Ovechkin and the NHL-leading Washington Capitals take the ice for the first time in over two weeks this evening versus Olympic tournament MVP Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena.
Ovechkin returned to the Capitals earlier in the week after his Team Russia failed to medal in Vancouver, losing to eventual gold medal-winning Canada in the quarterfinals. Ovechkin had two goals and two assists over four games in the tournament, but leads the NHL with 89 points and a plus-43 rating. He is also tied with Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the league lead in goals with 42.
The break seemed to come at the right time for Washington, which went 0-1-2 over its final three games after winning 14 straight. The Caps lead the NHL with 3.92 goals per game, but allowed 27 tallies over their last six contests.
"I think we've been giving up too many goals," defenseman Tom Poti told Washington's Web site. "We need to concentrate more on our team defense and less turnovers at both blue lines. We need to get the puck in more and not try to make so many fancy plays. We need to peak at the right time."
Despite their recent struggles, the Capitals lead the NHL with 90 points -- one more than the San Jose Sharks -- and own a 26-point advantage over the Atlanta Thrashers for first place in the Southeast Division. Washington has won each of the last two division titles.
Ovechkin will likely square off tonight versus Miller, who was named the MVP of the Olympics after leading Team USA to a silver medal. He posted 36 saves in Sunday's loss to Canada in the championship match and ended with an American Olympic record 1.35 goals against average, as well as a .946 save percentage and 5-1 record.
Miller gave up the game-winning goal to Canada and Crosby in overtime and wasn't given a chance for redemption by head coach Lindy Ruff last night. The Sabres were in Pittsburgh on Monday, but Patrick Lalime got the start in goal in a 3-2 setback. Still, Miller earned a round of applause from the Penguins' fans upon introduction.
Lalime allowed three goals on 28 shots while Toni Lydman and Derek Roy both scored for a Sabres team that lost for the seventh time in their last eight games (1-5-2). However, they still trail the Ottawa Senators by just one point for first place in the Northeast Division.
"I think after two weeks the competitive level was real high," said Ruff. "I don't think we were able to match [the Penguins'] level. We need more guys to move their feet more. We got that late, but it wasn't enough."
Miller should return to the net tonight and is second in the NHL with a 2.16 GAA and .930 save percentage. He posted a 35-save shutout at home over the Capitals back on December 9, but he also lost two games in Washington around that victory.
He is 10-5-0 with a 2.59 GAA lifetime versus the Capitals, who have lost eight of their last 10 in Buffalo.
Jose Theodore should start tonight for Washington and was on the losing end of Miller's shutout in his only outing versus the Sabres this season. Theodore is 9-13-1 with a 2.85 GAA in his career against Buffalo.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.

Super Bowl XLIII is now set, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers will meet each other on February 1st in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium to battle it out for the coveted Lombardi Trophy. The game kicks off at 6:00pm ET on NBC with announcers Al Michaels and John Madden covering the on-field action. Super Bowl XLIII betting odds at online bookmaker MySportsbook.com have the Steelers listed as an early -6.5 against the spread favorite.Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds
Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.
The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.
Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:
Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)
Arizona Cardinals +6.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110), +220 (Money line)
Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, MySportsbook.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.
