03/04/2010 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jordan Staal scored twice, including the game- winner 3:42 into overtime, as Pittsburgh topped the Rangers, 5-4, despite a career-high 50 saves for New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.
Evgeni Malkin assisted on the power play score in OT to move his points streak to 15 games, which equals a career-best, also set during the 2007-08 season.
Staal's three-point night, combined with an incredible defensive effort for the Penguins over the game's final 23-plus minutes, helped Pittsburgh to its second straight win coming out of the Olympic break.
Chris Kunitz ended with a goal and two assists, while Michael Rupp and Alex Goligoski also lit the lamp for the Penguins, who went 5-0-1 against the Rangers this season.
Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 12 shots before being lifted in favor of Brent Johnson in the second period. Johnson made four saves.
The Rangers were outshot, 55-16, and had a three-game winning streak broken. They had just one shot on net after the second period.
Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Drury, Michal Rozsival and Artem Anisimov had the goals for New York, which blew a two-goal lead.
Wade Redden was whistled for hooking 1:45 into the extra session. Malkin hit the post on a shot and Lundqvist came up with a couple of spectacular saves, but as the power play was set to expire, the Pens won the game.
Sergei Gonchar set the puck from the top of the left circle across the ice for Malkin's drive. Staal screened Lundqvist and was able to tip the puck into the net.
Anisimov scored 2:17 into the contest on a wrister from the left circle.
Play then got chippy on both sides. Sidney Crosby crumpled to the ice behind the net after being hit by Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Crosby then pushed his stick into Lundqvist. In turn, Dubinsky shoved Crosby and that resulted in a Pittsburgh power play at the 4:10 mark.
The Penguins capitalized on the man-advantage as Kunitz scored on a rebound from the left side of the net 6:03 into the stanza. It was actually a two-man advantage, created by a slashing call to Rozsival.
Jordan Staal gave the Pens a 2-1 lead at 9:58 when his backhand shot from the right circle caromed off the body of Rangers center Bryan Boyle and into the net.
Drury tied the game on a nifty individual effort with 5:21 left in the period. Fleury stopped the initial shot, but Drury was in front, and from his knees, he backhanded the disc by the Pittsburgh netminder.
Rozsival moved the Rangers to a 3-2 lead 2:03 into the second as his blast from the right circle beat Fleury high to the glove side.
A two-goal lead ensued while on a power play goal at 12:49. Dubinsky blasted the puck from the left circle and it caromed off the right post before deflecting off Fleury's back and into the net. That prompted a change for the Penguins, who went to Johnson between the pipes.
Rupp trimmed the deficit less than two minutes later with a successful shot from the left circle.
Goligoski tied the game at 11:59 of the third when his shot from the left side went off the skate of Marc Staal in front before sneaking by Lundqvist.
