02/12/2010 - Columbus, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mikael Samuelsson's fluke goal 7:56 into the third period proved to be the game winner, as the Vancouver Canucks held on for a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.
Nolan Baumgartner, Kyle Wellwood and Sami Salo also tallied for the Canucks, who have won three of their last four and improved to 4-3-0 on a 14-game road trip that has one game remaining -- at Minnesota on Sunday -- before the Olympic break. Andrew Raycroft was solid between the pipes, stopping 32-of-35 shots.
Rick Nash, Jared Boll and Raffi Torres each scored for Columbus, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. It was also the Blue Jackets first setback under interim head coach Claude Noel, who took over for Ken Hitchcock on February 3. Steve Mason allowed four goals on 35 shots in defeat.
With Columbus ahead 3-2 after two periods, Vancouver struck for a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the third. First, it was Salo blasting a one-timer from the point that went off the post and in to tie the score at 4:31 while on the power play.
The Canucks then took a 4-3 advantage at 7:56. Samuelsson's wrist shot from the slot deflected off a Blue Jackets' player, went high in the air and with Mason down in the butterfly position, bounced high in the air and over the shoulder of a startled netminder.
Columbus got a power play chance with 6 1/2 minutes to play, but weren't able to take advantage. Then despite pulling the goaltender in favor of the extra attacker in the closing minute and a half, the Blue Jackets couldn't get the equalizer as Raycroft turned aside all 19 shots in the third period.
Columbus opened the scoring only 22 seconds into the contest. Nash finished off an end-to-end rush when he beat Raycroft with a wrist shot to the stick side from the top of the right circle. Baumgartner then took a feed from Alexandre Burrows and put it home from in close on the left side to tie things at 2:08.
However, Boll's diving rebound tally just 30 seconds later put the Blue Jackets up 2-1.
Torres one-timed a pass from Jakub Voracek that finished a 3-on-2 break to give Columbus a brief two-goal lead at 10:28 of the middle stanza. But Wellwood capitalized on a Mason mishandle of the puck from behind the net and put it in just nine seconds later to make it a 3-2 game.
Game Notes
Boll snapped a 36-game goal-less streak...Nash now has a six-game point streak...Mason had his shutout streak of 122:55 come to an end after surrendering the goal to Baumgartner.

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their supplements to worry about what their opponents are doing).
Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this wont be an intelligent discussion.
Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).
Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.
Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit. And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. The plug-necked yahoos on your team, you can say, will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.
The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesnt focus only on your opponents team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.
What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Wheres your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, I'll try to type slower for you next time. Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.
Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, dont just conclude by saying your opponent is a twerp who drafts like my grandmother. Say that your opponent is a sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars. By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.
But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You wont be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, Im sure, to reply.
In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.
