Torres leads Liverpool over Blackburn

Soccer Betting Lines

02/28/2010 - Liverpool, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fernando Torres scored his 13th goal of the season and Liverpool edged Blackburn 2-1 on Sunday at Anfield to stay one point out of fourth place in the English Premier League.

Torres was making his first start since mid-January and scored the game-winner one minute before halftime. Steven Gerrard also scored for the Reds.

Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City and Tottenham in the race for fourth and the final berth in the Champions League. City beat Chelsea 4-2 on Saturday at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham edged Everton 2-1 on Sunday at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham is fourth on goal differential, with City six off the pace in that category but even on points. Liverpool is also six behind in differential.

Gerrard handed Liverpool the lead in the 20th minute when he drove a shot over Blackburn goalie Paul Robinson from deep inside the penalty box. Lucas started the play by picking out Gerrard with a pass from midfield. Gerrard then worked a quick passing combo with Dirk Kuyt, before sending a pass to Yossi Benayoun.

Gerrard continued his run into the area, collected a return pass from Benayoun on the left side and lofted a shot over a sliding Robinson from close range.

Blackburn pulled even in the 40th when Keith Andrews converted a penalty kick. After Benayoun's weak clearance dropped back inside the area, Carragher went to the ground and played the ball with his hand, leaving referee Alan Wiley no choice but to award the spot kick. Andrews hit the penalty to the bottom left.

Liverpool was back in front before the break when Torres bagged his 13th goal in just 17 Premier League matches.

Torres helped set up his own goal when he drove into the area and had the ball poked away toward the right end line. Maxi Rodriguez picked up the loose ball, sent a pass back to the middle with Robinson off his line, and Torres had to just direct the ball into the empty net.

Roman Pavlyuchenko scored his sixth goal in four matches and Luka Modric added a goal as Tottenham reclaimed fourth from Manchester City.

Jermain Defoe set up the 11th-minute goal, squeezing a pass through Everton's John Heitinga and Tim Howard to Pavlyuchenko for an easy finish from inside the six-yard box.

Modric doubled the lead in the 28th when he finished off a play involving all three of Tottenham's Croatian players. Modric and Vedran Corluka started the build up by exchanging passes, with Niko Kranjcar eventually sending the final pass to Modric inside the area. Modric curled a lofting shot over Howard and just off the bottom of the crossbar.

Ayegbeni Yakubu pulled Everton within a goal in the 55th, but Landon Donovan missed an open goal later in the half as Tottenham escaped with its 14th win.

Sunderland tied Fulham 0-0 in Sunday's other match.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
